We tear off rather than roof over
Laying new shingles over old ones is faster and cheaper on the day, and it hides everything that matters. Rotten sheathing, failed flashing, and a deck that has been quietly holding water for years all stay exactly where they are, now under another layer you have paid for.
We strip the roof to the deck, look at what is there, and tell you what we found before we cover it back up. If boards need replacing, you hear about it while the roof is open and the cost is still a conversation rather than a surprise.
The shingle range, and what actually differs
We install the full CertainTeed range, from three-tab through architectural and into the luxury lines. The differences that matter to a homeowner are wind rating, how the shingle handles a New England freeze-thaw cycle, and how it looks on your particular roof pitch from the street.
Heavier shingles carry higher wind ratings — up to Category 3 hurricane — and they sit differently on a steep pitch than a flat three-tab does. On a Victorian with a lot of roof visible from the sidewalk, that difference is worth seeing in person before you choose.

Warranties that need the installer to hold up their end
Lifetime shingle warranties are common. What is less common is a contractor who is certified to install to the standard the warranty actually requires. That credential is not a badge we bought. It has to be maintained year after year against the manufacturer’s standards, and we have held it continuously for more than a decade.
What replacement day looks like
Staging goes up first so the crew is working from a platform rather than off ladders — it is safer, and it is the reason the tear-off does not have to be rushed. Ground protection goes down over plantings and walkways.
Cleanup is the part customers mention most in their reviews, and it is deliberate. We magnet-sweep the property at the end of every day, not just at the end of the job.
Common questions
- How long does a roof replacement take?
- Most single-family homes in the area are a two to four day job, depending on the size of the roof, how many planes and valleys it has, and what we find once the old roof is off. Complicated roof lines and steep pitches take longer, and we will tell you which yours is when we quote it.
- Do I need to be home?
- No. Plenty of our customers are at work through the whole job. We will need access to the driveway for the dumpster and a way to reach the roof, and we will call you if we find something that changes the scope.
- Can you do the work in winter?
- Yes, within limits. Asphalt shingles need to seal, and in deep cold that takes longer, so we plan around the weather rather than against it. If your roof is failing in February we would rather do a sound temporary repair and replace it properly in the spring than install a roof that cannot seal.
